A Drive Not to Miss in El Paso

What comes to mind when you think of El Paso? Flat, dry, and rugged? It’s not a spot I had ever thought of as an ecotourism destination. But this year, I went there twice for various reasons and now see it as a jumping off point for some incredible mountainous parks and wilderness areas.

For starters, within a 20 minute drive of downtown, you will find Franklin Mountains State Park, Wyler Aerial Tramway, the Chihuahuan Desert Gardens, and the Organ Mountains. Within a two hour drive you can see the breathtaking White Sands National Monument, an endless expanse of sand dunes white as snow, as well as the San Andreas National Wildlife Refuge, Lincoln National Forest, and the famous Carlsbad Caverns.

On this trip we only had a half hour to spare and so we opted Scenic Drive Overlook, located in the heart of town.

While it isn’t as wild or woody as many of the places I write about, it is VERY easy to get to and provides a beautiful view of the mountains, so I wanted you to know about it.
