What to Wear Skeet Shooting

If you are a woman in Texas, it’s probable you’ll find yourself in one of the following situations:

Your boss is hosting a skeet shoot to raise money for a local politician.
Your new boyfriend thinks a romantic date is at the gun club.
You’re invited to a friend’s ranch and told to come prepared for some skeet shooting.
It’s just Monday and you feel like shootin somethin!

But, what do you wear that looks good and doesn’t get in the way? Ah, the dilemmas we Texans face.

I’ve put together the above outfit and you can click through to find specific items on the web. While this may look like just another outfit, there are some critical elements that make it well-suited for the skeet field.

1. The shirt covers the shoulder where the stock of the gun will rest. Gun-on-skin is not comfortable. When the gun fires, it releases power and pressure, which creates kick back which your shoulder will absorb. It’s nothing to be afraid of, and you may not even notice it immediately. However, after several rounds of shooting, you will feel it, and so I recommend having a layer of fabric between you and the gun. If you need additional padding, fold a towel up under your bra strap. I once was shooting in a competition, and that night, I had my high school prom. I donned a blue and purple spaghetti strap evening gown and low and behold, a large shoulder bruise was very visible!

PS, I don’t recommend wearing a shirt that you don’t want to get dirty. Gunpowder is black and can rub off on your shirt. The oil on your gun will also be a shade of black or grey and may get on you.

2. Closed-toe shoes. Some gun clubs require closed-toe shoes. Comfort is especially key because you do a lot of standing.

3. Shotgun shell pouch. You’ll need a place to carry your ammunition. Divided pouches are best because you can separate full shells from spent ones. Pockets work fine though!

4. I put these CassandraCollections earrings on here because they’re my favorite earrings but then realized, you can’t wear dangles and hold a gun up to your face! So wear studs.

5. Jeans — comfortable while sitting on the wooden benches you frequently see on skeet fields.

6. Not pictured here but essential equip: shooting glasses and ear plugs. Wal Mart or Academy sells these for under $10. I recommend the orange shades. With ammo and chunks of targets flying around, you need to protect your eyes. I’ve gotten hit in the face before.
